POW! WOW! KOREA 2017
POW! WOW!, a mural-based art festival coming to Korea and will be held from September 23rd to the 30th for eight days in seven different locations in Seoul (Sangdo-dong, Yeonnam-dong, Mullae-dong, Hongdae, Sookmyung Womens’ University, Hapjeong, Janghanpyeong).
POW! WOW! is anart festival where international artists gather to create art. The event has been held in various internationally-notable places such as Hawaii, Long Beach, Washington DC, Tokyo, Taipei for the past eight years and is finally coming to Seoul this year.
POW! WOW! organizes events to expose the public to new art and music, and is recognized globally for its quality and influence. POW! WOW! Korea’s regional director Andy Song describes POW! WOW! as “a festival that provides complete freedom for the artists to create, unlike other commercial murals,” and adds, “POW! WOW! is about cultivating new and comprehensive forms of art with the elements of art and music coming together. You will be able to witness murals and music in Seoul that you can only get here at POW! WOW! Korea.”
POW! WOW! founder Jasper Wong says, “”POW! WOW! has three main missions. One, it is to bring people together through creative pursuits. Two, to educate the youth and public about art and music through workshops, programming, and schools. Three, to beautify communities with art and color. We started in our own hometowns and we have made an effort to expand globally. We are hoping to fulfill these missions in Korea and build bridges through creative acts.”
The first-ever POW! WOW! held in Seoul will feature ten local and overseas artists who will paint in seven locations in Seoul, host POW! WOW! School of Music, a music workshop for young teen musicians in collaboration with YG Entertainment, on top of film screenings, exhibitions, pop-up shops, as well as a finale performance at the Seoul International Fireworks Festival (SIFF).
POW! WOW! Korea organizes public mural paintings to engage the streets and public spaces with art and to help cities become dynamic, culturally-driven spaces. POW! WOW! artists will be painting on large-scale walls in Sangdo-dong, Yeonnam-dong, Mullae-dong, Hongdae, Sookmyung Womens’ University, Hapjeong, and Janghanpyeong during the week-long event. Some of the artists will also be participating in the POW! WOW! live painting event at SIFF on September 30th.
POW! WOW! Korea has invited five local artists, Jay Flow, Royyal Dog, Xeva, Sixcoin, Yoon Hyup and five overseas artists, Andrew Hem, Cryptik, Jasper Wong, Tristan Eaton, and Persue.
POW! WOW! Korea will also be hosting POW! WOW! School of Music(PWSoM), a music workshop for young musicians with YG Entertainment and indie label Luv Jones, songwriter and producer Jordan Kyle, and DJ Getlive. Auditions for POW! WOW! School of Music ended on September 17th and is currently short-listing applicants who are aspiring DJs, producers, vocalists, rappers, songwriters, and instrument players between the ages of 12-19. Professional musicians and songwriters will be teaching and talking to selected individuals during the workshop, while creating music together. POW! WOW!
