MATTHEW AND ROXANNE of WOODEN WAVE

Matthew and Roxanne Ortiz are a husband and wife creative team, known for their hand-drawn aesthetic that reflects the playful island lifestyle of Hawaii. Born and raised on different islands, Roxanne grew up in Maui while Matt hails from Oahu. They met during a painting class in college and soon became partners in life and art. Since then the couple has collaborated on many projects, including paintings, woodblock prints, and the founding of the clothing line Vers Hawaii. Their illustrative style can also be seen in editorial work and visual branding they have done for other companies. Together their works represent a merging of styles and interests, especially drawing on their love for surfing and a deep connection to the ocean.

Matthew specializes in illustration, graphic design and printmaking. His clients include Innov8 magazine, Group 70 International and comedian George Lopez. Matthew illustrated the children’s book Mohala Mai ‘o Hau, which was awarded the bronze medal for the 2010 International Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards. Roxanne creates mixed-media works and installations, primarily based on environmental issues. Her penchant for color and whimsical detail include the use of stitching, collage, and found objects in her pieces. Roxanne’s work has featured in a number of exhibitions, including Mail 2.0 in Michigan, Still Impressed! in New Zealand, and Vie de Pacifique, an international printmaking exhibition on tour.
