“KIGEN” BY RYUICHI OGINO
“Originality is not the urge to be different from the others, to produce the brand-new; it is to grasp (in the etymological sense) the origin, the roots of both ourselves and things.” – Max Raphael
Kigen (きげん／起源) means “origin” in Japanese. This is Ryuichi Ogino’s first solo exhibition in Hawaii. Over the last few years, he has been working on a concept known as the “Out of Context Mash-Up”. Though the same concept is still evident in his recent works, there has been a resurgence of older themes as well as an emergence of new elements and approaches that’s been developed in recent years.
